Fire Prevention


About The Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau has the responsibility and authority to enter, investigate and perform routine fire inspections of all buildings, structures and properties in the Town of Secaucus with the exception owner-occupied detached one and two-family dwellings used exclusively for dwelling purposes as required by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.

It is our responsibility to enforce the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and other local fire safety regulations. This includes the inspection of all Life Hazard Use Properties as defined by Uniform Fire Code (i.e. gas stations, schools, nursing homes, daycare facilities, auto repair/auto body shops, places of assembly and large retail operations, etc.) and the inspection of all Non-Life Hazard businesses, offices and multi-family residences and other structures in the Town of Secaucus.

Additional duties of the Bureau of Fire Prevention are to investigating complaints, fire investigations, issuance of fire safety permits, issuance of violation notices and penalty notices for failure to comply with the law, and Fire Prevention Week activities.

The Bureau derives its primary funding from Life Hazard and Non Life Hazard Use registration fees. All moneys collected are solely used in the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, in public education programs and for materials and expenses related to fire inspections, investigations and prevention programs

Non-Life Hazard Use Registration and Inspections

The Secaucus Bureau of Fire Prevention is always striving to provide optimal services to the business community and to promote a fire safe community. It is the intent of the Bureau of Fire Prevention to promote a fire safe community through annual cyclical inspections of all premises and structures within the jurisdiction of the Borough with the exception of owner-occupied detached one and two-family dwellings used exclusively for dwelling purposes as required by the State of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code. .

 

Non-Life Hazard Use Registration Fees Schedule

In addition to the inspection and permit fees established by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Safety Act and pursuant to the regulations of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, the following additional annual Local Registration Fees for non-life hazard use groups shall be collected for each individual use and occupancy as described  in the Fee Schedule  in the  Folder Fire Prevention  documents pdf

"Permits shall be required, and obtained from the local enforcing agency for the activities specified in this section, except where they are an integral part of a process or activity by reason of which a use is required to be registered and regulated as a life hazard use. Permits shall at all times be kept in the premises designated therein and shall at all times be subject to inspection by the Fire Official." [N.J.A.C. 5:70-2.7(a)]

This list represents the more common items for which a fire safety permit is required; please refer to the code requirements as set forth in N.J.A.C. 5:70-2.7 for any additional information. Common permit fees and information can be found in the  Folder Fire Prevention  documents

 

Special Events

A temporary event or gathering, using either private or public property, that draws an estimated number of attendees, participants, guests and spectators exceeding three hundred fifty (350) people present on any day of the event, and that is or may be dependent on the use of municipal services, personnel, equipment, facilities, lands, roads, and/or finances must file a permit. This may involve one or more types of activities.

An application must be submitted and all questions answered in their entirety at least 30 days prior to the Special Event. Fees are established based upon services needed. Once your application is filed, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted with the fee total.

At the Fire Prevention Office located at our headquarters in Town Hall, we will register your business and determine which licenses and permits your type of business will require.

At the Construction Office, you will need to apply for a Certificate of Occupancy located in Town Hall.
